Enjoy the stark beauty of Japan in winter and visit the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2018. Draw inspiration for your quilting from the dazzling landscapes and soak up the culture of this exotic country. Lots of opportunities for fabric shopping! Walk through rustic villages, beautiful temples and gardens. Take a trip on the bullet train, visiting Kyoto. On this tour you will also see the sometimes dramatic and always beautiful scenery of Shikoku Island and the beautiful iconic Miyajima floating shrine and Hiroshima. Visit Iya Valley, one of Japan’s three “hidden” valleys. Its tall peaks and deep gorges were historically a safe haven for the Heike Samurai Clan. Enjoy famous gardens to enjoy the seasonal beauty of Japan. We will also be just in time to enjoy a famous Shinto shrine flea market.

Day 1 TOKYO Sat 20 Jan

Check in at hotel in Tokyo for 3 nights.

Day 2 TOKYO – HIROSHIMA Sun 21 Jan

This morning, we visit Asakusa temple including a stroll down the colourful Nakamise shopping street. We also visit Amuse Museum for the special exhibition of Boro. Afternoon travel onto Hiroshima. We stay at Hiroshima for 1 night.

We travel to Miyajima Island in The Inland Sea and visit the spectacular Sacred Goddess Miyajima Floating Shrine and world famous Torii gate. We also visit Hiroshima Peace Park before heading off to Shikoku Island/Takamatsu.

Today, we visit Iya Valley which is one of Japan’s three “hidden” valleys. Its tall peaks and deep gorges were historically a safe haven for the Heike Clan after their defeat by the rival Genji Clan during civil wars of the 12th century. This afternoon we return to Takamatsu and visit Ritsurin Park which is the largest “National Special Scenic Beauty Garden”, made up of 6 ponds and 13 hills beautifully arranged against the green pine trees as well as many stone arrangements that evolve into the wonderful style of the early Edo era.

We catch a train this morning to Tokushima. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the 400 year old House of Indigo, and enjoy the hands on experience of indigo dyeing creating your own stole (28cm x 138 cm). Travel on to Kyoto and check in at hotel at Kyoto for 3 nights.

Day 6 KYOTO - Shinto Shrine’s flea market - Thu 25 Jan

Morning, visit a Shinto Shrine’s flea market – hundreds of vendors selling Kimonos, antiques, tools, toys and craftworks are joined by many food stands. Today we will also enjoy a Shibori workshop and an exhibition of the history of Shibori. We then visit the Nishijin Textile Center to enjoy a Kimono show.

Day 7 KYOTO - Optional Geisha Dinner available - Fri 26 Jan

This morning we enjoy a tour of the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts, which has a superb display of local handicrafts. We enjoy a hands-on experience in a Yuzen kimono dying workshop. Afternoon at leisure. Perhaps follow your tour leader for more fabric shopping and to Yuzawaya. Nishiki market is another place worth visiting.

Day 8 KYOTO – TOKYO Sat 27 Jan

Today we travel by Bullet Train back to Tokyo and visit Nippori Textile Town, which offers a wide range of textiles, including quilting fabrics at wholesale prices. After enjoying shopping we check in at our hotel for 3 nights.

Day 9 TOKYO – Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival Sun 28 Jan

Visit to the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2018. Enjoy what’s been titled “The Largest Quilt Show in the World”, Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival.

Today we travel to Lake Kawaguchiko (Mt. Fuji national park) which is one of the five lakes surrounding the foot of Mt. Fuji. We visit Kubotaichiku museum with an amazing collection of Kimonos. Late afternoon, return to Tokyo.
Tonight is our last night in Japan and we gather to enjoy a Farewell Dinner.

DAY 11 TOKYO Tue 30 Jan

Enjoy your last day in Japan with some last minute souvenir hunting or an optional half day activity. Perhaps follow your escort to Meiji shrine and Omotesando promenade and Harajuku.
11:00 Check out from hotel. ~ Tour concludes ~
Afternoon leave hotel for Narita/Tokyo airport by airport transfer service. Depart for your home.
